Hagmatana I, 1967 Acrylic and graphite on shaped canvas
Frank Stella’s Hagmatana I is from the artist’s well-known Protractor series (1967–9, with additional works until 197). Its shaped canvas presents interlocking half circles that recall this mathematical tool, while in this context, they additionally recall the tight interlocking circles of embroidery hoops. Stella’s title references the Iranian city of Hamedan, which the artist had visited in the 1960s and the complex geometries of Islamic architecture and woven rugs witnessed there.
