Sonia Gechtoff was a prominent figure in the American Abstract Expressionist movement, working on both coasts, first in San Francisco and later in New York City. Her abstract landscapes combined gestural intensity with a deep fascination with iconography, poetry, and the sublime. By applying multiple colors to a palette knife, Gechtoff used her whole body to recreate the movements she observed in the landscapes.
In Untitled (SF-2007-AC-878), the undulating strokes of deep blue and violet evoke a scene that suggests waves, wind, or rising smoke, yet resists a definitive interpretation. Two golden arcs cut through the flowing blue, resembling streams of light that create both contrast and rhythm. The painting features a black border that separates solid terrain from an ephemeral atmosphere. This border resembles the framing of icons and creates a “reverse perspective,” where distant planes expand instead of receding, capturing a fleeting moment of movement within the broader landscape. In this work, the natural world is both stylized and alive, presenting an abstract landscape where evanescent movement crystallizes into luminous forms. By inhaling the organic and exhaling the symbolic, Gechtoff abstracts total legibility and demonstrates the raw force of nature through her landscapes.
