Untitled (Militares y Civiles), 2018

Rug made by 12 unemployed civilians from Párraga, La Habana, from clothes used by military and civilians in Cuba

150 × 150 inches

Untitled (Military and Civilian) references the shag rugs that are common in many homes in Cuba. This large floor piece by Reynier Leyva Novo addresses how a given political context can be understood as a ‘weaving’ of divergent ideological ‘threads’ and historical circumstances. In collaboration with twelve unemployed civilians from the Párraga neighborhood on the southern outskirts of Havana, the artist wove together fragments cut from worn Cuban military uniforms and civilian clothing, articulating an ambiguous political statement about the relationship between these two populations. Recent years have seen an increase in civilian challenges to military control, as well as the oppression of civilians by the military and the militarization of various aspects of the Cuban economy and society at large. This textile represents the close and intertwined power relationship between these two sectors of society. It serves as both an aspiration for their peaceful coexistence and a perpetual potential for conflict due to their proximity. As a rug on the ground, designed to be literally stepped on, it also illustrates how these two populations are perpetually kept down by the political regime.
