Through Spaces of Subjection: Black Painting II, Meleko Mokgosi examines the complexities of subjecthood and identity. Part of his ongoing project Spaces of Subjection, this work explores power, representation, and the ideological structures shaping African, African American, and Black life.
Using a monochromatic palette, Mokgosi draws on influences such as Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and Michel Foucault to interrogate the intersections of historiography, culture, and the process of becoming. His practice challenges traditional painting, inviting viewers to reflect on the dynamics of identity and subjectivity.
