Michel Pérez Pollo
b. 1981, Manzanillo, Cuba; lives in Madrid, Spain
Untitled, 2018
Oil on canvas

This work is inspired by the study of the backs of sculptural heads belonging to the Collection of Ancient Art of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana. By reproducing them in 3D and making various geometric cuts, Michel Pérez Pollo achieves an abstract, disturbing visuality. A certain ambiguity of metaphysical resonances refers to the Surrealism of Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dalí. The work is a tribute to Greco-Roman art and its contributions to art history. At the same time, it is a pretext to subvert the codes of representation of Eurocentric power, anchored in the classical world and its majestic formal legacy.

A graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte in 2007, Pérez Pollo became a prominent Cuban painter. With a particular abstract-figurative practice, he is part of the generation of painters who emerged on the island during the first decade of the twenty-first century.
