Pyrography on wood, in 40 parts

This work brings together a set of book sculptures Lester Álvarez has compiled from unpublished literary works ignored by the Cuban ruling party. These volumes never saw the light of day and now do, in the form of sculptures: wooden blocks impossible to open, browse, or know. These “books” were made using recycled materials from furniture or other objects. In 2018, the Maleza project became an independent nonprofit publisher dedicated to publicizing the work of uncomfortable, marginal Cuban authors who went unpublished, proscribed, or forgotten by the official publishing system on the island. Álvarez, who graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in 2011, completed a master’s degree in cinematographic and audiovisual archives at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola in San Sebastián, Spain, and was a resident at the Madrid Film Academy. Hence, his work now expands into the audiovisual field.
