Long-Term Freeze “Self-Portrait with Back Turned” from the series Frozen Sex, 1975
Acrylic on canvas
Marta Minujín’s Long-Term Freeze “Self-Portrait with Back Turned” (1975), from her Frozen Sex series, explores the body as both a site of liberation and a critique of its commodification. Rendered in vibrant hues of orange, pink, and burgundy, the abstracted figure lies frozen and passive, inviting and withholding connection.
Through this work, Minujín subverts traditional representations of femininity, using her own body to challenge societal norms that objectify and immobilize women. The flattened, expansive composition evokes both the materiality of flesh and the commodified spectacle of the body, transforming the subject into a powerful commentary on gender roles and autonomy.
