Homenaje a Eude, 1959
Mixed media on canvas

Modest Cuixart’s Homenaje a Eude portrays a grey landscape where his abstracted forms are heightened through torn layers of latex and paint. Cuixart was a significant figure in post-war Spanish painting, with his artistic style evolving from Surrealism to Informalism throughout his career. He viewed material as a living substance, emulating natural processes such as growth and erosion, and explored how movement and texture can serve as a basis for communication.

The thick layers of latex over the paint create textured reliefs, transforming the canvas into a sculptural landscape. A light hue of red emanates dimly from the center of the painting, creating a glow reminiscent of heat in a cold terrain. Scratches and incisions cut through the thick layers, creating a sense of turbulence against which circular, amorphous forms appear to drift, possibly alluding to the primordial chaos of creation itself.
