In this series, Levi Orta focuses on the phenomenon of famous political figures who are or were also engaged in artistic creation. The artist intends, in this case, to explore historical processes from an unexpected perspective: he copies fragments of works made by said leaders to probe the subjectivity of these politician-artists. It is usually painters who do the exercise of “copying a painting,” and usually a painting by a great master. In this case, according to the artist himself, his approach to this process is always “with ironic intent.”
Orta graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte, SOMA in Mexico City, and the Ashkal Alwan Home Workspace Program in Beirut. His work unfolds at the intersection of the spheres of art and politics, a relation that he explores and subverts through various discursive strategies.
