Rafael Villares (b. Cuba, 1989) is a Cuban-born interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, photography, drawing, video, and painting. His practice explores the histories of the Natural and Social Sciences, presenting the landscape as a site where art and science intersect to reshape our perceptions of Nature. Frequently collaborating with scientists and researchers, Villares develops projects that challenge conventional ways of seeing and imagining the world.
He holds an MFA from the Yale University School of Art in New Haven, USA, and studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana. His work has been widely exhibited, including at the 59th Venice Biennale, the XII Havana Biennial, the Vancouver Biennale, the Yale Peabody Museum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Villares has participated in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Residency Unlimited, both in the USA. His works are part of significant permanent collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA), the Chazen Museum of Art in Wisconsin, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Recently, he was appointed Assistant Professor and Area Head in Sculpture at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, where he currently lives and works.
