A World Far Away, Nearby and Invisible

The works on view at El Espacio 23 suggest territory as a vital force: a living, shifting organism, a refuge, a site of purification, and a space for meaning. In contrast, the landscape emerges as a cultural construct: a subjective gaze that, through aestheticization, fragments and categorizes territory in order to name it. Curated by Claudia Segura Campins in dialogue with curators of the Pérez Collection, Patricia M. Hanna and Anelys Alvarez, A World Far Away, Nearby, and Invisible becomes a dialogue between physical substance and symbolic resonance. Within this conceptual frame, territory is rendered in sharp, unembellished clarity, revealing its political, performative, and transformative dimensions.

El Espacio 23 is a contemporary art space founded by collector and philanthropist Jorge M. Pérez.

Located within a repurposed 28,000 square foot warehouse in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, El Espacio 23 serves artists, curators and the general public with regular exhibitions, residencies and a variety of special 

projects drawn from the Pérez Collection.

Residents

Madeline Jiménez (Santo Domingo, 1986) lives and works between Mexico City and Santo Domingo. Through her practice, she imagines the transformations that both objects and the conventions of art should undergo when they are traversed by a body with another history. By recoding representation and its territory through three-dimensional machinic drawings and spatial systems, she creates a language that endows the object with multiple qualities, seeking to slow the process of the object’s instrumentalization. Her work pursues the construction of an object in permanent flight—one in constant motion.
