Christopher Myers b. 1974, United States Nation of Refugees, 2017 Appliqué fabric
Inspired by appliqué quilt traditions, Myers’ large-scale textile works explore issues such as slavery, freedom, displacement, and oppression, among other social concerns. Nation of Refugees visualize some sort of existential reckoning, a claiming of place, voice, liberty. Myers favors everyday fabrics, tiny floral prints, and solid colors with a domestic feel to represent fictional and historical bodies and lives, hopes and travails.
