The Most Beautiful of All Mothers (XV), 2015
Organic and inorganic materials

This sculpture was exhibited at the 14th Istanbul Biennial as part of a larger installation of twenty-nine sculptures of animals placed on eighteen cement plinths in the Sea of Marmara near the shores of Leon Trotsky’s former house on Büyükada Island. Depicting different species of mammals carrying other animals or their own offspring, the original installation recreates an imaginary, post-apocalyptic future where these threatening yet majestic creatures come back to reclaim the land.

The title of the installation, The Most Beautiful of All Mothers pays homage to Mother Nature, while each individual animal, in this case the kangaroo, is a metaphor of the duality of femininity. The female animal is carrying and protecting her young while carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
