Cotton voil crochet and wooden knobs

Ernesto Neto’s crochet piece made from hand-dyed cotton stretched onto wooden pegs references symbols and myths related to the cosmology of the Huni Kuin people of the Brazilian Amazon region. Neto has been living with this indigenous group and studying their belief system for over a decade. Taught to him by his mother, the knotted crochet that the artist utilizes in this piece intentionally references Huni Kin textiles.  This technique has been engaged in many of his recent projects to create entire dwelling structures, as well as portal-like forms and ladders that draw spiritual connections between the earth and sky. The diamond and lozenge-like shapes included in GeOwlmeSong reference markings on the skin of the jiboa (boa) snake, a sacred and mythological figure within this community.
