Roberto Huarcaya (Lima, 1959) is a Peruvian photographer and visual artist. Founder and former director of the Centro de la Imagen in Lima, his career spans teaching and artistic practice. He studied Psychology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, as well as film and photography. He has taught at the University of Lima and co-directed the Lima Photo Biennial and the Lima Photo fair. His work has been presented in international exhibitions and biennials and is held in collections including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), the Museum of Latin American Art (California), the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico), the Museo de Arte de Lima, El Espacio 23, and several private collections.
He has represented Peru at the 49th and 60th Venice Biennales (2001 and 2024) and has participated in events such as PhotoEspaña, ARCO Madrid, Paris Photo, Art Basel Miami, The Armory Show, Donggang International Photo Festival, and the biennials of Havana, Daegu, and Sumuk. Among his recognitions are being a finalist for the Prix Pictet (2025), the Petrobras Award (Buenos Aires, 2010), and the Imagen del Perú Competition (1991). He won the Korean Foundation competition (Seoul, 2025) and was an artist-in-residence in Paris through a fellowship at the Cité Internationale des Arts. His work explores the relationship between image, time, and nature. Over the past decade, he has worked experimentally without a camera, creating monumental photograms.
